1. Adjust your posture- This may not seem like a way to treat depression but it can be a very effective home remedy that lightens your mood. When you become tense or you start to feel negative emotions your body will start to become smaller and your muscles and tissues start to compress. Make a conscious effort to sit and stand straight and tall, stretching your body and helping to alleviate the tension. You will feel better mentally and physically.
2.Deep breathing- If you want to improve your mood and your mental health then deep belly breathing can do the trick. Close your eyes and sit straight. Now take a deep inhale through your nose, inhaling while you count to 4. Focus on the sensation of your belly expanding with the breath. Hold the breath while you count to 7, and then slowly exhale. Feel your belly contracting as you exhale. Do this several times.
3. Look at the bigger picture- When depression strikes try to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. There will always be bad days, we all have them, but try to focus on the positive things that you have in your life instead of dwelling on the negative. Think of a few things that you should be grateful for, and look at what you have that others do not. This can help put you in a positive frame of mind and will help you maintain better overall mental health while putting your situation in perspective.
