Designer drug addiction is becoming an increasing problem in Canada and the USA, as well as other countries around the world, and there are some things that parents, teens, and young adults need to know about these drugs. In a recent Monitoring the Future survey it was found that the use of designer drugs by middle school and high school aged students are on the rise, and an alarming trend emerging is that these individuals no longer view many of the designer drugs as dangerous. These substances may also be called club drugs, and they are typically used in social settings such as clubs and parties. There are more than 200 different designer drugs that can be found today, and their use may be extremely dangerous. Unlike prescription medications which are manufactured in controlled and sterile environments most of the club drugs are created by amateurs at home or in inferior labs.
Some of the most common signs and symptoms of designer drug addiction may include:
- Confusion
- Disorientation
- Changes in personality
- A lack of good hygiene or changes in the personal appearance of the individual
- A weight loss or gain that can not be explained by other things
- Insomnia or problems getting to sleep
- Unusual sleeping patterns, such as sleeping all day and staying up all night
- A decline in work or school performance
- Financial problems, such as always needing to borrow money or not being able to pay bills when this was never a problem previously
- Finding drugs or paraphernalia commonly related to club drugs
