Interesting Alcohol Facts and the Link Between Alcohol Abuse and Disease

alcohol factsAlcohol facts and statistics show that there is a strong link between alcohol abuse and disease. This link has been proven in study after study over time. Chronic alcohol abuse has devastating effects on all of the systems in the body. Many people do not know that 75% of cases where esophageal cancer is diagnosed that this condition is attributed to chronic alcohol abuse. If chronic drinking was not a factor then these cases would not occur. Roughly half of all cases of cancer that occur in mouth, larynx, and pharynx are caused by excessive drinking. Women have a 10% higher risk of developing breast cancer if alcohol abuse is a factor. 2 out of 3 cases of pancreatitis are caused by chronic alcohol abuse.

There are many alcohol facts which chronicle that alcohol abuse causes disease and medical problems. When ER patients who reported for injury treatment were tested for alcohol almost half were positive, and out of these one third of the patients were intoxicated. Three fourths of the patients who went to the ER and were intoxicated showed signs of chronic alcohol abuse. Substance abuse is the #1 cause of death and disability each year. Did you know that approximately 1 in 3 people who drink heavily will develop hepatitis as a result of their alcohol abuse? An alcoholic has 10 times the risk of developing cancer than those in the general population. Alcohol related accidents and injuries are the #1 cause of teen death around the globe.
