Teen alcohol abuse is on the rise, and the average age that teens take their first drink has become alarming. In the USA females on average will start drinking at age 13, and males will usually start at age 11. There are many risks associated with teen alcohol abuse, and many facts which sow the dangers of this activity. Parents and teens need to know that:

  • Over 50% of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 20 have tried alcohol at least once
  • Teen alcohol abuse causes teens to engage in risky sexual behaviors and have unprotected sex
  • Teens who abuse alcohol are more likely to be the victim of a violent crime
  • Teen alcohol abuse often leads to alcohol abuse or addiction as an adult
  • Girls are almost as much at risk for teen alcohol abuse as boys are
  • Teens who drink alcohol are more likely to engage in binge drinking
  • Alcohol abuse can cause teens to demonstrate aggressive or violent behavior
  • Teens who drink have a higher risk of attempted suicide
