Take life one day at a time, especially in your first few months of sobriety. Don’t worry about tomorrow or next week, focus on getting through today without giving in.
- Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you can just have a little. You must adopt complete abstinence and stay away from all forms of substance abuse if you want to be successful.
- Don’t neglect your sleep. In the world today it can be easy to try and cut back on sleep in order to get more done but this is a dangerous mistake. If you are not well rested it is much easier to fall into a negative state of mind which can lead you straight to relapse.
- Make sure to eat right, and don’t skip any meals or snacks during the day. When you miss a meal or skip a snack your blood sugar can drop, and hunger can make you grumpy and irritable. You will be more likely to give in temptation at these times.
- Exercise every single day. When you feel like giving in go for a jog or swim a few laps in the pool. Exercise and intense physical activity will boost the endorphins in your brain, helping you feel good naturally.
- Build a network of support people. A solid support system means that there is a sympathetic ear and a shoulder to lean on whenever you are feeling low or you want to cave and start the substance abuse again.
