Borderline personality disorder is one of the mental health disorders that can affect the moods, behaviors, and relationships of the individual who has this disorder. Symptoms of BPD have been found in medical literature that dates back 3,000 years so this is not a disorder that is new or modern. In the past a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder was provided when the clinician believed that both neurotic and psychotic symptoms were being displayed by the individual, so that the patient was on the border between these two disorders. In 1980 this mental health disorder received a stand alone diagnosis in the DSM III and today this condition is receiving more visibility than ever before. According to the National Institute of Mental Health approximately 1.4% of the population has borderline personalty disorder.

Individuals with this condition may have disruptive thoughts and emotions, and a very poor self image. This mental health disorder often starts early in adulthood, and it is not yet known what causes BPD to develop. 8% of the people who have this condition will eventually develop suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Someone with this disorder may be reckless or impulsive, and they may have difficulty regulating their moods and emotions. Borderline personality disorder may co-exist along with other mental health disorders. In order to be diagnosed with BPD the individual must experience and exhibit at least 5 out of the 9 recognized symptoms for this disorder.
