Narcotic medications tend to cause a sense of euphoria, and it is this effect that is appealing to people who have a problem with prescription drug abuse. Individuals who abuse any type of drug may look just like everyone else, and they include soccer moms, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and those who are struggling to make ends meet. There is not a typical profile which can help identify individuals who are abusing pain medication or engaging in prescription drug abuse, these people are found in all walks of life and all income levels.

Prescription drug abuse is on the rise, and there is no set age group or income level that makes this behavior more common. Some people who start abusing pain medication may have been taking the medication for legitimate reasons in the beginning. If you have been seriously injured or you have a lot of pain for some other reason then you may need prescription pain medications to deal with this. Over time addiction starts, and then you eventually start abusing pain medication and searching on the street for these drugs when they can not be legally obtained from a physician. Doctor shopping is common, and individuals who have a prescription drug abuse problem may even steal medications from friends and family.
