1. Has substance abuse or compulsive behavior caused legal problems? An intervention may be needed if someone has been arrested or is facing criminal charges because of their substance abuse or other addictive behaviors. This includes drug use, alcohol abuse, compulsive gambling, excessive shopping, or other harmful behaviors that can be destructive.
2. Does the individual spend most of their time looking for the desired substance or engaging in the destructive behavior? When drugs, alcohol, or other problem behaviors create an issue then the person starts to spend more time looking for opportunities to engage in these actions. The individual will spend a considerable amount of time looking for and engaging in these activities, with less time left for a normal life and typical responsibilities.
3. Has school, work, or family responsibilities been affected by the substance abuse or compulsive behavior? Often one of the first indications that an intervention may be needed is that normal responsibilities are being neglected. School or work performance is affected, and the person may stop taking care of household chores and other responsibilities as well.
4. Are there financial problems because of the drug or alcohol abuse, or due to other problem activities like shopping or gambling? Substance abuse and addictive behaviors can have an incredible financial toll. Drugs and alcohol can be very expensive to obtain on a regular basis. An intervention may be needed if financial difficulties are a recurring problem.
5. Do the actions of the individual put them at risk? Risky behavior is a clear indication that an individual needs an intervention. This includes thrill seeking, visiting dangerous places or people, and other risky activities.
