Borderline personality disorder is one of the mental disorders that has no clear cut causes. Many experts believe that this specific disorder develops because of a combination of different factors. Some individuals are genetically predisposed to this mental disorder because of their family and medical history, with BPD showing up in past generations and in family members. Environmental factors also play a role in this condition and certain environmental factors can increase the risk that an individual will develop borderline personality disorder. A third area of causation that has been identified with BPD is brain abnormalities. Some studies that have used twins that suffer from this mental disorder have suggested that at least some of the traits for the disorder are inherited and are genetic in nature. There has been research that shows personality traits can be inherited just like physical characteristics.

Some scientific studies have shown a link between BPD and a number of other mental disorders, and individuals with this condition often have at least one relative who also suffers from some form of mental illness. Some brain abnormalities that affect the areas of the brain that regulate emotion can also cause BPD to occur. Right now there is no way to identify individuals who will develop BPD, but there are risk factors that can be identified and evaluated so that the correct diagnosis and treatment can be given.
