Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder, which is not the same as obsessive compulsive disorder, is a mental disorder that can have a big impact on the life of the individual who has this condition. An individual with OCPD is extremely preoccupied with schedules, details, and everything being in perfect order. These people see the world in black or white, right or wrong, and they do not accept that there are gray areas. Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder may also be referred to as anankastic personality disorder. The sense of perfectionism that is felt with this type of mental disorder is not a benefit, it can actually interfere with normal life and daily activities. Because the individual with OCPD is rigid and unyielding they are typically seen as lacking humor and they may be hard for others to tolerate.
Someone who has Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder may not have successful family and romantic relationships, and any connections are often strained because those with this mental disorder are inflexible and they can not change their way of thinking. Someone with OCPD will typically make unreasonable demands on those around them and this can cause all but the strongest relationships to be tense and to end quickly. If you or someone that you care about has symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder there are programs which can help treat this mental disorder. It is possible to live a normal life even if you have OCPD, however treatment is needed in order to overcome the excessive preoccupation with certain aspects of life in order to gain control.
